Neath Church Picks Up National Award

11 May 2019

NMCC Family Church Neath has been awarded a £2,000 prize after nominations from across the UK were invited for the annual Serving the Community Awards.

The awards, sponsored by national church insurer Congregational Insurance, recognise churches that harness the skills of their members and other local volunteers, to establish and maintain social initiatives within their community.

NMCC Family Church provides a unique weekly service for the deaf community which draws people from a wide catchment area, with some travelling from as far as Hereford to attend. Pastor, Pat Collins, leads “Fellowship with the King” which is a socially engaging, uplifting and informal gathering open to everyone.  Each session includes a meal, and an opportunity to socialise and participate in table games, snooker, pool, arts and crafts activities.

John Williams NMCC Minister said “We are so pleased and excited to have won this award. It was an honour to be nominated and to be recognised for how much work our Pastor Pat Collins does with the deaf community.  We also work with vulnerable groups within our local community to help and support those in need as well as offering companionship.  The prize fund is very unexpected, and it will be used to further develop our out-reach programme.

The church also offers a free clothing service to families and individuals who are referred by local agencies such as the ladies refuge home, local foodbank and social services.  The clothing hub operates on a referred appointment basis only, ensuring confidentiality and privacy for all clients. A beautiful starter pack of new born baby clothes and toiletry supplies in a gift packed basket for Mum and baby are also given to expectant parents.

Every Thursday the church offers a warm welcome to anyone who drops into their informal coffee morning for a chat and snack with friends; or they may be new to the area and would like to meet new people.

Margaret Slater, Marketing Manager of Congregational Insurance, commented “We place a strong focus on supporting community initiatives that really make a difference and unite people.  By offering a unique service for the deaf community, developing links with local businesses, and working in partnership with other local agencies NMCC Family Church is clearly meeting the needs of the community in Neath and further afield”.

Yvonne Campbell General Secretary of the Congregational Federation commented: “Each year I am humbled at the amount of activity and Kingdom building stories I see within the applications for a Serving the Community Award. The churches chosen this year have all partnered with other organisations which has strengthened and complemented their work.  I am delighted that NMCC Family Church in Neath has been awarded their well-deserved generous cash prize from Congregational Insurance which will enable them to continue and expand their work in sharing the good news of Jesus in action”
